Moorer offers an essay scholarship on the book. I expected either a boring, tedious account of professional terms and lengthy ledgers or some cheesy chumped-up pep talk the kind that makes a person ill.

I should also point out that my notes for this may be jaded over by the fact that I was VERY depressed at the time of reading this and had basically given up on finishing college. I will not lie to you and tell you there are no cheesy ‘god loves you and will take care of you’ lines which come in easily-skippable chunks when they become tiresomeor ‘your family will always be there for you’ phrases.
However, his appreciation and respect for his family is very admirable, and he keeps the cheesy stuff from getting out of line.
He also keeps the concept of responsibility and honor to one’s parents in the foreground, whcih I very much appreciated. As far as the religious aspect goes which I expected to offend me at least oncehe occasionally quotes a biblical passage, but never once tries to make a less-than-obvious application of them, which means no offense to anyone not of his particular spiritual practice.
Also, though he doesn’t try to make people feel better about their family situations, the book IS very encouraging. I can personally reference it for helping me put the drive back in my life. The reason for that balance, I believe, is that he is so very easy to relate to.
He does not hold anything back from the reader- when he fails, he admits that he failed. When he did something foolish and paid for it, he does not project blame onto other people. The book is clearly written by an intelligent, well-rounded, responsible, down-to-earth sort of fellow. He also writes as if he is talking to you, for you. This may be due to his ongoing endeavors to encourage young people to make something decent out of their lives, regardless of the path or time it takes to do so.
It can be likened, at times, to the tone and attitude of the biblical David’s accounts easily the best way to explain it in the bible but more like The New World Translation, personal and deep, rather than language no one can understand. Once I realized how young he is, I was even more impressed. The book is mature, but simple.
It is not meant for grammar natzis, but for a friendly nudge in the shoulder. He is clearly a humanitarian with good intentions for his human family, and that shows through clearly in every word. This book was actually so encouraging that I chose to keep it for future reference, as down times often come my way.
I’m not naturally the emotional or needy type, but even if I were, this book would clearly keep me from feeling guilty or worthless due to that. It seems to tell you that what you perceive as personal short comings are simply signs of humanity, and that no one is perfect, so relax, you’ll get where you’re meant to go.
At the same time, it does not relieve the reader of responsibility or control of his or her, you terrible feminists: Especially tword the end, it also makes it clear that Dr.
Moorer believes that every individual is a meaningful human being that has power over how the world turns out. If you have further misgivings or uncertainties about this read, yo can find one of his seminars on YouTube by searching for his name. Overall, I oath recommend it to young people, especially those who feel stuck or as if their life is not in their hands.
I have, in the time since I read it, recommended it to former and current students of mine who were clearly struggling. The vast majority of them have had similar sentiments. Pofessoriate note, I am writing this review under my father’s amazon account as mine is new and will not allow me to publish reviews yet. I expected to relate to his story, as I also had some dark and confusing years early on, but I was pleasantly surprised by how comforting and insightful the book was.
It’s refreshing to read about a focused and hardworking person who experienced and overcame the setbacks that can affect everyone. Furthermore, I admire porfessoriate drive to failurf his story with young people everywhere. Cleamon Moorer grew up in a supportive family with ambitions to become an engineer.
After his first year at a specialized college, he realized life doesn’t always play out the way you expected or planned.
This story takes you through his personal disappointments to a newfound purpose. Although prmoise are not all as successful as young as Dr.
Moorer, we can find our own purpose and passion through faith and hard work. Even if your are not a religious person, there is so much to be gained by sitting down with this very readable book. I would especially recommend it to anyone in a time of trouble or umcommon.
You will come out the other end feeling lighter, more positive and with a new sense of trust in yourself. One person found this helpful. First, I’d like to agree with other reviewers that this book is in desperate need of a copy editor.
Basic typos, grammatical and syntactical errors were distracting from the work.
I do, however, hope that the author will put forth a second edition, and would like to apply my review to the content of the book rather than its presentation.
I found this book to be extremely encouraging form it helped propel me forward with my own doctoral studies. I read this book aloud to my two children, and I noticed that the occasional deep questions posed to the reader would make this book an excellent choice for a book club discussion meeting.
Though the author is obviously deeply informed by his Christian faith, I found the Bible quotes to be neither lip service nor proselytizing, and feel that the themes of faith can be applied to a diverse spiritual readership.
From Failure to Promise: an Uncommon Path to Professoriate by C. Moorer (2010, Paperback)
I would gladly give this book as a gift, especially to a high school graduate. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. I have been raised Catholic but as an adult I have strayed away from any religious following. I still have a deep rooted connection to God and the heavens around us. Humans are vain not to believe there is a divine being that created and watches over us.
But less preaching and more focused on the book itself; I am currently an advancing professional in a stagnant part of my career. This book was placed in front of me at the right time and location on this earth for me to notice it.
It helps me overcome all my frustration to succeed. I struggle with patience so, while reading the book it touched on every area in my discouragement. I need to ask God to help me and have the trust in him he will.
I will because this is something I can not control and God will place me in the right location at the right time with my own judgement and good karma. Overall, my take away is ‘God Sure does have a plan and I will allow his guidance to my promise land. As for as the prophecy portion, I can say I am not that far of a believer but “to each its own”. My truth is not your truth and vice versa. A must read and re-read! See all reviews. What other items do customers buy after viewing this item?
