Deck Asm Assembly Shop Drawings: Four sets of the deck joint assembly shop drawings shall be submitted four weeks prior to fabrication. Layout, Installation and Product Drawings: Four sets of the layout and installation drawings and two copies of the product drawings shall be submitted four weeks prior to installation.
One set of each of the layout and installation drawings and c1850 deck joint assembly shop drawings, marked to indicate the required changes, will be returned to d1805 Contractor and the deck joint assembly manufacturer. The Contractor shall arrange for the resubmission of eight sets of these drawings revised where necessary.
The Contractor will be provided with a stamped copy of these drawings. The lubricant shall be water soluble and non-staining. The use of lubricant adhesives will not be permitted. Field splicing of external waterstop shall be by heat fusion.
The joint face adtm be true to line such that the joint seal shall bear fully and uniformly. The Ethyl Vinyl Acetate Foam shall be installed in the joint with the laminations horizontal.

All splices shall be shop splices. Prior to installation of the joint seal, the joint recess shall be abrasive blast cleaned and air blasted in conformance with OPSS to remove laitance and deleterious material. Adhesive shall be applied liberally to both sides of the seal and to both faces of the recess.
Adhesive on top of the seal shall be scraped off immediately. The joint seal asttm be installed such that, when fully compressed, it remains below the level of the concrete surface.
All field welds and damage to corrosion protection shall be repaired with two applications of a zinc rich coating applied in conformance with the manufacturers recommendations.
When the deck joint assembly is stored on site it shall be protected from dirt and deleterious materials and stored so that warping cannot occur.
The deck joint assembly shall be supported d11850 wood blocking spaced a maximum of 2 metres apart. The preformed seal shall be continuous with no splices.

The dimensions of the block-out in the barrier wall shall not be greater than those of the block-out in the deck and ballast wall. The deck joint assemblies shall be placed after the asphalt paving operation has been completed. The removal of existing concrete required to prepare the block-out shall be carried out prior to the paving operation. When new barrier walls are to be constructed, bulkheads shall be used to form block-outs in the barrier wall for the deck joint assemblies.
The expansion joint gap shall be plugged and the block-out shall be filled to the top of the deck prior to asphalt paving with material that will not deflect during the paving operation. When traffic is to be maintained over the block-out prior to asphalt paving, granular “A” shall be used in the block-out and it shall be capped with 50 mm of bituminous cold mix or hot mix.
The method used to plug the gap shall accommodate the anticipated movement and retain the fill material in the block-out during the period of traffic maintenance. The top surface of the bituminous mix shall be maintained smooth and level with adjacent concrete and shall not ravel. No material other than granular shall come in contact with reinforcing steel. The limits of the block-out shall be accurately marked to be visible after paving. The paving of the deck and the paving of the approaches 20 m beyond the end of the approach slabs shall be done continuously.
Except when traffic is to be maintained over the unfinished joint, all material used to fill the block-out shall be removed within five working days after the material is placed.
The new asphalt pavement shall be sawcut full depth at the limits of the block-out. The asphalt from the block-out areas shall be removed and temporary wood angles with a minimum thickness of 19 mm shall be placed to protect the sawcut asphalt edges for the full depth of asphalt. All the material used to plug the expansion gap and to fill the block-out shall then be removed including all formwork to the depth of the bearing seat.
Before placing the reinforcing steel the concrete faces of the block-out shall be abrasive blast cleaned in conformance with OPSS After completion of this work the deck joint assembly shall be placed in the block-out in the position specified in the Contract.
Immediately prior to placing the concrete in the block-out, the top clamping system shall be adjusted to give the specified setting width “J” required by the stamped shop drawings.
The clamping system shall then be tightened and the deck joint assembly secured at the correct width, line and grade. Abrasive blast cleaned areas shall have the concrete placed in the block- out within 48 h or shall be reblasted. A bonding agent shall be applied and concreting shall then proceed in conformance with OPSS No voids shall be left under the structural steel components.
The concrete dam shall be hand finished with a wood float. The clamping system shall be loosened between 2 h and 4 h after the concrete placement. Atsm deleterious material shall be removed from the temporary clamping system bolt holes; bolt holes and bleeder holes shall be drilled to a depth of 20 mm, and all holes shall be air blast cleaned prior to filling with epoxy.

After concreting, the exposed faces of the structural steel shapes shall be cleaned to remove any concrete and deleterious material. After installation of the deck joint assemblies, the Contractor shall sawcut a 20 mm wide groove for the full depth of asphalt adjacent to each steel armouring angle. If the previously sawcut face is undamaged and within 5 mm of the specified location, the Contractor may elect to form the groove.
The grooves shall be cleaned, dried and sealed with hot poured rubberized joint sealing compound in conformance with OPSS The preformed seal, with a lubricant and bolted components, shall be installed in conformance with the stamped installation drawings. Before installation of a new deck joint assembly and epoxy coated bars, the existing reinforcing steel and structural steel against which new concrete will be placed shall be abrasive blast cleaned in conformance with OPSS Where a new joint assembly will be welded to existing hardware, the surface of the existing hardware which will be in contact with the new joint assembly shall be abrasive blast cleaned in conformance with OPSS Holes for dowels or anchor bolts embedded in non-shrink grout shall be core drilled and shall be flushed out with water and air blast cleaned immediately after drilling.
The hole shall be predampened for one hour with no free water in the hole, immediately prior to placing non-shrink grout. Holes for dowels or anchor bolts embedded in epoxy shall be impact drilled. The holes shall be cleaned of all deleterious material by air blasting and shall be dry when the epoxy is placed. Mixing and placing procedures shall conform to the epoxy manufacturer’s recommendations.
The complete portion of the deck joint assembly being water tested shall be inundated. At no time shall the measurement between the water level at the curb line and the high point of the preformed seal in the curb, sidewalk or barrier wall be less than 25 mm.

Where maintenance of traffic is necessary d150 joint may be tested in overlapping sections. Leakage of water through the deck joint assembly installation or the concrete-steel interfaces during this test will constitute failure of the deck aastm assembly.
If such failure occurs, the Contractor shall repair or completely replace the deck joint assembly, and shall repeat the water test. The method of repair shall be submitted in writing to the Contract Administrator for review prior to commencement of repair work.
When the repairs are not specified in the Contract, payment for the cost of repairing existing deck joints and of repairing concrete prior to the installation of deck joint assemblies or preformed seals will be administered under Extra Work procedures.
